Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has called for locally based players to be considered for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad, insisting their inclusion could significantly boost the domestic league and wider economy.
Speaking on SportyFM, the ex-Udinese star said that while talent and performance must remain the priority, giving home-based players a pathway to the World Cup would create long-term benefits for Ghanaian football.
“Including local players in Ghana’s World Cup squad will boost the league and economy,” Agyemang-Badu explained. “On the other hand, players must also prove themselves.”
The former U20 World Cup winner reflected on his own rise, using his career as an example of how local talent can thrive at the highest level when given the opportunity.
“When I was playing for Berekum Arsenal and the U20 team, I proved myself before getting the national call-up. So they must show they deserve it,” he said.
However, Agyemang-Badu believes the national team can still play a strategic role in supporting the domestic game.
“If possible, we can still push a few in so that the local clubs can benefit financially and strengthen our league,” he added.
His comments arrive amid ongoing debate about whether locally based players are given a fair chance compared to their foreign-based counterparts. With Ghana set to appear at their fifth World Cup in 2026, selection decisions by head coach Otto Addo will be closely scrutinised.
