INAUGURATION OF UN CIVIL SOCIETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The UN Resident Coordinator, Daouda Toure has called for leaders of civil society to demand for a more strengthened accountability both for the UN and Civil Society at large. He said this during the inauguration of the UN Country Team Civil Society Advisory Committee in Accra

Civil society advisory committee (CSACs) to the United Nations Country Teams (UNCT) serve as forums for dialogue and exchange with national civil society actors at the country level.

The advisory committee seek to strengthen and support the ability of the UNCT to understand and analyze the role and contributions of civil society in the changing development process of THE country. He said they would contribute to policy development and thinking in UNCT, not only with regard to policies directly affecting and involving civil society, but on broad development policy.

Inaugurating the committee, Mr. Daouda Toure reminded the members on their monitoring role and urged then to help increase the understanding and collaboration between the government, the United Nations and civil society in the country. He emphasised on their advisory role and said they will serve as a key vehicle to strengthen relations between the United Nations, civil society partners and governments, adapt the relationship to current needs.

UN Heads of Agencies present thanked UNDP for leading the process. They challenged and encouraged positive critisms on issues and the role of government and positive solutions. The UN Heads and the committee members brainstormed on possible areas the strategy would address.

The members of the Committee pledged their support and commitment to the work of the Committee. They addressed a few critical areas of support that UN and Government seek to promote and pledged to link the local and policy levels.
