I’m corrupt – Alban Bagbin

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has admitted that he’s a corrupt politician.

According to him, “we are all corrupt” adding that per the current political system operating in Ghana, “even if Angel Gabriel is brought into the country, he’ll be corrupt.”

He bemoaned the practice where political office is treated as private property saying “you allow people to look for money from anywhere and anyhow to sponsor themselves and it’s now very expensive getting into political office and then you say please serve the public and not the sponsors. He who pays the piper calls the tune.”

Speaking to Bola Ray on Starr Chart Wednesday, the veteran lawmaker called for a relook at the whole process of election, adding that there’s the need for the state to play a critical role in regulating monecracy in Ghanaian politics.

“To get into Parliament now, depending on your constituency you’ll not spend less than GHC 1,000,000. You’re looking at the T-shirts and I will not take anything apart from lacoste, you’re looking at motorbikes, you’re looking at the pick-up vehicles, billboards. What we do here is not done in many other countries. Botswana is always first in the corruption index, because when you go there and they are campaigning you don’t hear this cacophonous noises, you don’t see these billboards, posters. As a country, we have to really look at this. “

He added: “We should all admit we’re all corrupt…is a fact because of the system. Yes I’m corrupt. We have pastors who go through this same system and they become corrupted.” Hon. Bagbin told Bola Ray.
