The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has called on the Electoral Commission not to use high illiteracy rate as an excuse not to implement the e-voting system, but immediately begin a nationwide education on possible use of the system.
The party had written to the Electoral Commission after the last election requesting the nation uses the electronic voting system.
The Electoral Commission (E.C) Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan yesterday announced that the nation is not ready to go electronic voting considering the high illiteracy rate which persists.
But speaking to Citi News, PPP General Secretary, Kofi Asamoah said the EC’s excuse is a poor one.
“Dr Afari Gyan himself says he’s not against e-voting and actually confirmed the fact that it simplifies the voting processes, makes it easy and transparent,” he stated.
Mr. Asamoah further stated, “his only problem is lack of education so if we live in a country where we have identified problems, the only thing to do is not to lament about it but provide solutions.”
“We can educate voters, political parties and the EC’s own employees so that in the next four years, everybody knows that we are going to do e-voting,” he added.
“Let everybody bring up any reservations they have and let us correct them. You don’t need to know how to manufacture mobile phones and laptops before using them,” he added.
