Illegal miners contributed to shut down of Obuasi mine – Peter Amewu

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Peter Amewu, has reiterated government’s commitment to revamping the Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine with the aim of bringing the Obuasi Township back to its vibrant economic life.

In pursuing this agenda, government will not tolerate any individual or group of persons who seek to ride on the back of party politics to engage in illicit gold mining or galamsey within the lawfully acquired concession of the company.

Mr Amewu gave the caution during an interaction with some management and staff of Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi, chiefs and journalists after touring the mine.

The areas the Minister visited included the deep underground pit, the P2W Water Treatment Plant and the Sulphite Treatment Plant, part of which has been trespassed by illegal miners.

Mr. Amewu noted with concern, that about 12 thousand illegal miners have invaded the concession of Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi mine, a situation that contributed to the shutdown of the Mine.

The Managing Director of Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Eric Asubonteng, said despite the shutdown of the mine, the company will continue to undertake socially beneficial projects and programmes within the operational communities.

The Chief of Adansi Kushia, Nana Kwae Pimsan, blamed government for causing the perpetuation of galamsey by not taking deterrent measures when the practice began.
