Illegal logging in going on in Asubima Forest

Techiman, Dec 16, GNA- There is illegal felling of teak trees in Asubima Forest that stretches from Ataboso to Woraso in the Techiman District.

Mr. John Kwasi Kwao, Assembly Member for Baamiri Electoral Area, told the GNA in an interview that officials of the Forestry Department should visit the area to check the practice.

The Asubima Forest stretches from Asonkwaa in the Nkoranza District to some parts of Techiman District and Offinso District in the Ashanti Region.

He expressed concern about how some people had managed to enter some parts of the forest at Ataboaso and Woraaso and are felling teak trees in large quantities.

”The trees are felled and conveyed from the forest in the night”, he said.

Mr. Kwao expressed regret that officials of the Forestry Department had not been paying regular visits to the forest to check the illegal activities that go on.

He complained that the local task force formed to check the illegal activities of chainsaw operators and indiscriminate tree felling had not been functioning as the illegal operators had managed to ”close ranks with them.”
