During a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, President John Dramani Mahama restated his dedication to what he called Ghana’s enduring moral and family principles.

He stressed that his views mirror those of the Christian Council, particularly on issues regarding gender and family values.

According to President Mahama, “A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position. So there are no questions or equivocations about what we believe.”

He further emphasized that his beliefs align fully with the Council, noting, “I believe that we are completely aligned with the Christian Council in terms of your belief.”

President Mahama also expressed support for the Speaker of Parliament’s suggestion that the anti-LGBTQ+ bill be presented again before the House to allow further deliberation.

He explained, “We agree with the Speaker to relay the bill and let Parliament debate it, and then if there are any amendments or whatever that have to be done.”

Ultimately, he made it clear that the decision of Parliament and by extension, the Ghanaian people would determine the bill’s fate. As he put it, “If the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses the bill, votes on it and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it.”
