The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has expressed surprise at the decision by the Ghana Police Service to pause inspection of drivers’ licences and other car documents on the roads.
The commission argued that the decision would lead to increased cases of accidents.
The NRSC said the decision came as a shock since it risked eroding all achievements made to ensure safety on the roads.
The NRSC has recorded over 1,500 road accident-related deaths since January to September 2016.
May Obiri-Yeboah, the Executive Director of the NRSC, said on Wednesday October 5 that the decision was “a big blow and I am afraid it will lead to more accidents”.
“It is just some few months to Christmas and also the elections and a lot of movement is expected. We think it is rather a time to strengthen enforcement for people to obey the rules and save more people on our roads,” she told Joy FM in an interview.
