IGP must act on ‘disgraceful’ political vigilantism – Methodist Bishop

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist church of Ghana, Most Reverend Titus K. Awotwe Pratt has questioned the Inspector General of Police David Asante Appeatu’s effectiveness in dealing with political vigilantism in the country.

About 19 acts of violence spearheaded by the various vigilante groups affiliated to the New Patriotic Party have been recorded since President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took over from John Mahama.

The recent attack took place in Karaga in the Northern region by a new group known as ‘Burma Camp.’ The irate NPP youth have forced the DCE and the Youth Employment Agency boss of the area out of office.

Several stakeholders including former President Mahama have questioned the government’s commitment in ensuring security in the wake of these attacks.

Speaking to Ultimate FM’s Isaac Bediako, Most Reverend Titus Awotwe Pratt said leaders of the governing NPP must reign in the rampaging youth.

“The judgement in Kumasi on those boys [Delta Forces] is a slap in the face of justice. You cannot behave like this and then charged this flimsy money and then go free, it is not good.

“If indeed they are members of the NPP, the leadership should make sure that those who go wrong are put right,” Rev. Awotwe Pratt told Bediako.

He added that “the IGP must be seen acting and working and nip this thing in the bud so that it doesn’t happen again, it is disgraceful.”
