ICT to improve teaching and learning

Accra, Dec 23, GNA – Mr Yaw Osafo-Marfo, Minister of Education and Sports, on Friday stressed the government’s commitment to the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to improve teaching and learning in schools.

He stated that ICT was needed to broaden training and a resource for a wider section of the population to improve education and the quality delivery.

This was contained in an address read on his behalf by Ms Sophia Awortwi, Director of Science and ICT Education, Ghana Education Service, at the Third Annual Award Ceremony of the Global Teenager Project on the theme, “Empowering Young People to have access to ICT Education.” The Minister said the goal of the Ministry of Education (MOE) was to involve all schools in the ‘Computers in School Programme’ and to get institutions connected to the INTERNET.

“Every educational system has an obligation to deliver on public expectations of quality education for economic growth and social development,” he said.

He said ICT strategies had been developed to extend technical vocational education to institutions and to promote pre-school education.

“The Ministry is also committed to the deployment of ICT-based tools and systems to facilitate the process of improving the quality of education, training and sports at all levels,” he said. Mr Osafo-Marfo noted that the Project had trained 550 teachers in basic ICT skills and 840 students in WEB development skills and said the programme in Ghana had been adjudged the most innovative out of thirty participating countries this year.

Sixteen of the twenty-seven schools participating in the project were presented with prizes.
