Former President Jerry Rawlings has expressed his willingness to tell Ghanaians about the events that occurred under the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) regime. He told MP’s of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a meeting that he will at the right time, when called upon, tell Ghanaians about the efforts he made as AFRC Chairman to reduce the level of tension in the country and the violent mood that led to the execution of some former Heads of State and other personalities.
A statement issued after the meeting said, President Rawlings welcomed the reconciliation process but said he was concerned about the manner in which it is being presented by the ruling government. He also condemned various media reports about problems in the party saying that they are exaggerated. Flt Lt Rawlings urged the Parliamentarians to be frank and be quick in pointing out to him their disagreements with anything he says or does wrong.
The former President congratulated the MPs for their efforts to be the voice of the voiceless in Parliament, and asked them to be mindful of the party’s history and tradition of defending the interest of the people and insisting on the truth.
He also asked them to mindful of the way some of them are portrayed in the media as being happy with how the government is running affairs of state. The MP for Nadowli and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alban Bagbin urged the MPs to work towards victory for the NDC in the 2004 general elections and stressed the importance of unity. He revealed that the MPs are holding consultations on a number of issues and will present a position paper to the ex-President soon. He thanked President Rawlings for his forthright position on a number of issues raised at the meeting.
