Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, says he sometimes have to disguise himself in order to access information to make a strong case for his political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The action, he noted, had to do with the blockades that come along ones way in accessing information when your political party is in opposition.
“Life in opposition is a struggle”, he noted.
Interacting with Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM, Wednesday, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who is also the MP for Suame, recounted a number of difficult times and the risks he had to go through to lay his hands on some vital information to advance his argument on the floor of Parliament.
“We are looking at improving our good democratic governance and if you have to make a point or engage in argument or contribute to a debate from an informed perspective or nourish your debate, people are denying you because they are afraid that if they give you the facts and figures, whoever is in position to identify them will perhaps scold them”.
“There was a particular occasion I was looking for information relating to road construction in the country. Some roads had been constructed and I wanted to know what was happening within that sphere. You know what? I had to drive to a place – I had to drop my driver because some of these things you don’t involve them. So, I had to drop him and drive my official vehicle to a particular location, park, take a taxi – drop somewhere, take another taxi – enter a hotel and goes straight into a room and meet that person. I was only able to source for that information at 12:30am”.
“There was another occasion I was looking for another information on Construction Pioneers (CP) who were alleged to have duped the nation to the tune of $90m. I was able to get some relevant information at 2:00am. The twist and turns – let’s meet here and that. At the end of the day we were able to meet at 1:00am. And before we went through the motions, it was 2:00am so I left the hotel room, came out disguised and drove out the tax – three taxis and I was in my official vehicle and drove home. So sometimes it is risky”, he noted.
