Head coach Nii Odartey Lamptey has stepped down from his role at Eleven Wonders, saying he leaves the club “with his head held high” despite their difficult start to life in the Ghana Premier League.
The newly promoted side have struggled to find their footing this season, collecting just two points from seven matches and sitting 17th on the league table. Their latest 3-2 defeat to Nations FC proved to be the tipping point for the former Ghana international, who confirmed his resignation in an interview with Asempa FM.
“A lot of people called me from Kumasi saying I’d been sacked. I wasn’t sacked. I submitted my resignation letter to the club’s leadership,” Lamptey clarified.
The former Aston Villa and PSV Eindhoven forward said his decision was purely personal, stressing that his reputation and contribution to Ghanaian football remain intact.
“I’ve already made my name. This job can’t add to or take anything away from the name I’ve made. I was just helping them out,” he said.
Despite the team’s struggles, Lamptey expressed pride in the work he has done with the club, insisting that he has helped to build a foundation that will serve them well going forward.
“The foundation of the team has been laid, you can see it when they play. It’s just the way Ghana football is, but I hope things change,” he added.
Eleven Wonders are expected to announce a new head coach in the coming days as they look to steady their campaign. The team will next face second-placed Aduana FC at the Swedru Sports Stadium, hoping to spark a turnaround after a turbulent start to the season.
