The immediate past Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye, has said that what he is bequeathing Ghana after a long career is a more united and efficient Ghana Police Service.
He said under his tenure as IGP, the service has become more united devoid of factions, unlike it used to be; indicating that the peaceful co-existence among men and women in the service is what has enhanced the performance of the service in the discharge of its core function of protecting life, property and most importantly, keeping the internal security of the country.
Mr. Paul Quaye made these brief remarks in an extempore address, during a thanksgiving church service held in his honour last Sunday (26th May 2013) at the Ghana Police Church, Accra.
He chronicled some of his achievements during his tenure of office, the most priceless among which he hinted, was how he leaves behind a united and most importantly, efficient police service.
“I retire with dignity and pleased in that, under my leadership, the Ghana Police Service has experienced so many remarkable reforms to the admiration of Ghanaians and the world at large. The service has become very attractive following the migration of personnel onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) and the various reforms that the service has undergone both in the area of manpower and adequate logistical support, which has resulted in police presence in every corner of this country,” Mr. Paul stated.
“I feel honoured retiring from the service in the sense that, as the then IGP, I superintended over a peaceful and violent-free election in last year’s December 7/8 presidential and parliamentary elections, irrespective of the heightened tension at the time”, Mr. Quaye pointed out.
Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye also recalled some of his difficult moments as an IGP, particularly, the continuous insults rained on him by some political activists; but hinted that, he remained focused and never allowed the vile propaganda and attacks against his personality to take off his core responsibility of ensuring that Ghana remains peaceful.
Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye, thanked the management team of the service he put in place, for their support, and urged it to remain focused and united, so as to keep the banner of the revered service flying.
In conclusion, he called on his successor, Mr. Mohammed Alhassan, to build on the rich legacies left behind in order to make the service the toast of the world as far as police standards are concerned.
