Dr. Sakou Nkrumah has debunked media reports that he has resigned from the ruling National Democratic Congress to help rebuild the Convention People¹s Party of which his sister, Samia Nkrumah, is chairing.
Confirming his resignation from the NDC on Xfm 95.1 this morning, Dr. Sakou Nkrumah said he quit the NDC to avoid any confrontation with his sister (Samia Nkrumah) who is the current CPP chairperson and not to rejoin the CPP as is been speculated. ³I¹m not rejoining the CPP?I resigned from the NDC so I am not in confrontation with my sister because of the role and position she has now in the CPP but I can work with any of the parties that belong to the Ghanaian politics that includes the NDC, CPP, PNCŠ² Dr. Sakou Nkrumah said he did not quit the NDC to support the rebuilding of the CPP as carried by some sections of the media adding that he still believed that the CPP could not be changed with the NDC in the position of strength and power it currently is. Giving reasons why he quit the NDC, Dr. Sakou Nkrumah stated that he resigned from the NDC so he would not be in confrontation with his sister (Samia) who is now leading the CPP. ³There have been two major reasons why I¹ve taken this decision. The first and most important one is that as you know my sister has been elected as the chairperson for the CPP party?she has the responsibility of reviving the CPP and where I was in the NDC I think would have come into direct confrontation and conflictŠ²
³Any revival of the CPP cannot be done ignoring the NDCŠthe reason why the CPP¹s fortunes have dwindled over the years is because the NDC has risen to the position it has and that has been done over the years and it will be difficult to change the situation. The way to change it is for the two parties to have a working relationship and if possible, merge.² Dr. Sakou Nkrumah explained that since it was obvious leaders of both the CPP and NDC would not want to merge, he would ³be a stumbling block to her (Samia) ambition², should he stay in the NDC. He also stressed that since he does not play any significant role in the ruling NDC, the future ³did not look very encouraging² and as such his stay in the party would make situations uncomfortable; especially with recent developments in the CPP. He added that his resignation from the NDC was not to re-join the CPP but rather, place him in a better position to work with any political party on the list of Ghanaian politics adding that he had not decided on his next move.
