I did not cane her – Director of Education tells public

The western regional director of Education, Madam Enyonam Afi Amafugah has issued an apology to Madam Eva Mensah, a teacher of the Well Road Methodist primary school in Sekondi for lashing her with a cane.

In a statement released by the western regional director of Education, Madam Enyonam Amafugah, said she acted on impulse when she witnessed Madam Mensah canning the legs of class two pupils.

Initially, she thought it was only one pupil but watched as she lashed other students.

Madam Amafugah corrected the teacher by telling her that canning in schools were abolished.

Madam Mensah retorted rudely which infuriated the western regional director.

She responded by taking the cane from her and hitting her palm to demonstrate her how she should cane the pupils.

Madam Amafugah emphatically stated that she did not cane her as has been widely reported and the head teacher can attest to it .

She assured that she will ensure the best of both pupils and teachers and promote conducive teaching and learning environment in the western region.

Right Rev. Daniel Degraft Brace, Bishop of the Methodist church Sekondi Diocese who chaired the meeting advised that the incident be forgotten and the difference between the two must be settled.

Madam Amafugah gave the teacher a hug and apologized for committing such a disgraceful act and asked for forgiveness.

Present at the meeting were Rev Francis k. Ennuson, Sekondi ,Methodist diocese and Regional manager Methodist educational unit, Mr. Isaac kojo Quandoh, Metro GNAT chairman, Lily Otoo Regional GNAT secretary, Cosmos Ennu Kwaw Metro GNAT secretary, Charles Ngumah DDE of Shama, Ebenezer Oscar Asene DDE of ahanta west and George Tweneboah Kodua headmaster of Methodist senior high school.
