Accra, Feb. 13, GNA – The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C. Quaye, on Wednesday stepped up the war against mosquitoes with the spraying of more areas, saying the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has improved equipment and efficient spraying team to carry out the task. Speaking during a mosquito spraying exercise in the Teshie-Nunqua, Trade Fair site, Burma Camp and Kpeshie Lagoon, he said the RCC was responding to demands of helpless victims of communities who had suffered from aggressive swarms of mosquitoes.
Sheikh Quaye, who has taken the exercise to spray mosquitoes as one of his key projects, said several areas, including Korle-bu, Alajo, Adabraka, Larterbiokorshie, Kehe, La and Ministries had benefited. In an interview with the GNA, the Minister said the exercise would be extended to all areas in the Greater Accra Region.
According to him, the war against mosquitoes was reignited just in time for the start of the Ghana 2008 tournament to protect the football teams.
He said the mosquito spraying exercise was a fight against mosquitoes in a modest way towards good health, adding, “Though mosquitoes cannot be eliminated they could be suppressed.”
The Minister said the exercise was suspended last year due to inadequate insecticides and equipment. However, the RCC received a donation from the Libyan leader, Col. Muammar Gaddafi last year in the form of equipment, insecticide and protective clothing to facilitate the campaign.
“At the same time last year Sonitra, a construction company, also donated 150,000 Ghana cedis to support the anti-mosquito campaign.” He said with sustained donations from “Friends of Accra” the war against mosquitoes will help reduce the mosquito population and minimize malaria.
