Hypertension worldwide major killer

Kumasi, June 9, GNA – Dr Samuel Agyei, a Medical Officer at the Kwadaso Seventh- Day Adventist (SDA) Hospital, has admonished Ghanaians to avoid life-styles that expose them to hypertension.

He said hypertension is a leading cause of death globally, explaining that currently 600 million people had been identified clinically as hypertensive, while the World Health Organisation records have established that three million people die annually due to the health problem.

Dr Agyei was giving a talk on hypertension at a 13-day pubic sensitisation programme on basic health issues and some common diseases in Kumasi.

The programme is being organised by the South-Central Ghana Conference of the SDA church.

Dr Agyei called on the public to reduce their intake of fatty foods, which he said contained high cholesterol that impedes the free flow of blood through the veins and arteries. This and other factors such as smoking, stress, obesity, over anxiety and anger as well as excessive drinking, place one at a high risk of becoming hypertensive, he said. 11 June 05
