Hundreds of people console Rawlings

Accra, Feb. 15, GNA – A day after a fiery fire ravaged the official Ridge residence of former President Jerry John Rawlings, sympathisers are=

still visiting the premises to catch a glimpse of the ruins. As workmen cleared the debris, former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyema= n Rawlings spent the better part of the day greeting people from all walks of life.

People stood in long queues to greet the former First Lady who was joined by her family, members of the 31st December Women’s Movement and leading functionaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Nana Konadu said she was overwhelmed by the fact that people had travelled from as far as Tamale to wish them well.

“I am thankful for all those who have offered their best wishes in diverse ways for their wonderful show of support,” she said.

A delegation comprising the Chairmen of the NDC, Dr Kwabena Agyei, New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Chairman, Mr Peter Mac Manu and the Chairman of t= he People’s National Convention, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan as well as the Greater=

Accra Regional Chairman of Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mrs Susan Amankwah also called on the former First Lady. Later the NPP Chairman told newsmen that the disaster was a matter o= f national concern and transcended political biases.

He noted that the joint visit was a sign that politics cannot be allowed to cloud the issues of such nature. CPP Election 2008 Flagbearer, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom also called to cons= ole Mrs. Rawlings.

Mr. Paul Victor Obeng, leading member of the NDC and a representativ= e of the National Union of Ghana Students Council also called on Nana Konad= u. The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu and his council of elders also called to express their sympathies.

In a related development the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) have empathised with the former first family about the fir= e disaster. A letter signed by Secretary General, Jean-Pierre Elong Mbassi said,=

“we are learning with great sorrow the burning of your home. In these sai= d circumstances, please accept our sincere regrets and our compassion. “We thank the Almighty that there was no injury during this hazard. We pray that He gives you the courage to rebuild a new house and that He fil= ls you and your family with His blessings. “Please accept our deep respect and good wishes,” the statement sai= d.
