Human rights delegation calls on CJ

Accra, Sept. 2, GNA – A delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) based in the Gambia on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on the Chief Justice (CJ), Mrs Justice Georgina Wood, at his office in Accra. The delegation, which is on a promotional mission to Ghana, has already met with the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Joe Ghartey and other high ranking government officials. The group’s meeting with the CJ, which was held behind closed doors, is believed to centre on methods of improving human rights issues.

The visit also formed part of the Commission’s promotional mandate being undertaken in accordance with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with the objective of engaging with relevant stakeholders to exchange views on ways and means of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights in the Ghana. Dr Robert Eno and Mrs Aminata Jawara Manga, legal officers at the Secretariat of the African Commission accompanied the Commissioner Ngary Musa Bitaye, leader of delegation.

During the Mission, the delegation will also meet with a cross-section of human rights actors in the country, and relevant government officials, Members of Parliament, the Judiciary, civil society organisations, political party leaders, and other individuals or institutions capable of enlightening the African Commission on the human rights situation in Ghana. At the end of the mission, the preliminary findings will be discussed with relevant government authorities.
