HSWU undertakes clean-up exercise at Hospital

Koforidua, April 30, GNA – Members of the Health Services Workers Union at the Koforidua Regional Hospital on Friday, undertook a two-hour cleaning of the hospital as part of activities to mark the May Day in the Koforidua Municipality. The group weeded some parts of the hospital, desilted gutters and cleaned the louvers and walls of the hospital. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency after the exercise, the Local Chairman of the Union, Mrs Martha Benyarku, said one of the major challenges of the hospital was infection prevention, hence the union felt that as part of activities to mark the Workers Day, they should use it to support the activities of the hospital. The Secretary of the branch, Mrs Christabel Odoom, said some people had always regarded the union as a group of people always fighting management for increase in salaries and improvement of conditions of service but the union itself could do more to improve upon its conditions.

She said the clean up exercise was aimed at inculcating in the members the idea of regular contribution towards good environmental conditions at their place of work.

The Environmental Officer of the Hospital, Mr Daniel Kwakye, said his unit had always been maintaining the environmental conditions of the hospital but the exercise had exposed some shortcomings in their work. He said he would ensure that the needed attention is given to those lapses in the work of his unit and expressed the hope that the union would make the exercise a regular feature.
