Sunyani, July 18, GNA – Two non-governmental organisations on Friday presented a computer and accessories worth 17.5 million cedis to Brong-Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs in Sunyani. Dr. Irene Korkoi Odotei, Lecturer in History at the University of Ghana, Legon, presented the items on behalf of the Lagos branch office of Ford Foundation of the United States of America and Open Society of West Africa, based at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana. She said it was the objective of the donors to connect the offices of all the Regional House of Chiefs to the Internet to enable them to have easy access to information and to share ideas.
Dr Odotei, who is Director of Governance, Culture and Development Project at the University, noted that there was the need for the records of the Judiciary and the history of the chieftaincy institution to be stored for posterity. The Foundation, through training workshops has already trained secretaries and registrars of traditional councils to be able to use the computers effectively.
Dr. Odotei said the computer would complement their communication links and said a scanning machine would be provided. He promised that traditional councils would also receive similar equipment to help them face the challenges of the 21st Century. The Lecturer appealed to beneficiaries to take proper care of the items to ensure their longer life span and pledged the continued support of the Foundation. Nana Bosoma Asor-Nkrawiri, Omanhene of Sunyani on behalf of the House thanked the donors, saying the computer would help the House in its administrative work. Present at the ceremony was Nana Abena Boatemaa, Queenmother of Odomase No. 1 Traditional area.
