Homosexuality on the increase in Western Region

Dr. Kweku Anin Karikari, acting Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, said on Tuesday that the phenomenon where “Men sleep with Men” is gradually gaining grounds in the Western Region.

He said this had serious health implications and attributed the practice to the influx of foreigners as a result of the oil industry.

“All manner of unsafe health practices are going on in the region. We are not safe at all as a region,” Dr Karikari told the GNA in an interview.

He said there was the need for the region to go back to the ABC method of HIV prevention which is Abstinence, Be Faithful and Condom use and that this could help save the region from serious health consequences and its resultant economic burden on the government.

Dr Karikari said some people had even formed clubs where indiscriminate sexual activities were conducted and appealed to practitioners to keep the “ABC” method of HIV/AIDS prevention in mind to avoid further spread of the virus.

“The Region’s Health Directorate is also working hard to minimize the effects of the virus if not to completely eradicate HIV/AIDS from the Region,” he said.
