Hole in bank’s wall, cash missing

Tema, Feb 7, GNA – Staff of the Ashaiman Branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) on Monday reported to the workplace only to detect a hole dug in their wall and an amount of 4.6 million cedis missing. According to a Police statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Daniel Laryea Odai, Tema Regional Police Commander, the Ashaiman police received information at 0600 hours that a hole had been perforated in the building of the Ashaiman branch of GCB.

The statement said the police together with the bank officials, including Mr John Ahiaku, the bank’s Manager, conducted a search in all the offices including the strong room where a safe was kept.

It said the safe together containing the amount of 38 million cedis was found intact and that all official documents were also intact.

However, Madam Lawrencia Papafio, a clerk at the bank claimed that an amount of 4.6 million cedis she kept in her drawer belonging to her was missing, the statement said, adding that apart from the said amount, nothing else was missing at the bank.

Meanwhile, Police Lance Corporal Dauda Haruna, who was on guard duty on the day of the incident, has been placed in police custody pending investigations, the statement said.
