A nine-hour downpour has caused extensive flooding in Hohoe in Ghana’s Volta Region, displacing hundreds of residents and submerging homes.
The heavy rain fell on the night of Sunday, September 27, 2026, with the situation worsening after the River Dayi overflowed its banks.
Hohoe Zongo, Galikorfe and the area from Kiki’s to Atabu Junction are among the worst-affected locations. Floodwater has also made sections of local roads unusable.
The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has appealed for calm as authorities work to assess the damage and respond to those affected.
“The severity of flooding in parts of Hohoe is a matter of serious concern. The situation has resulted in varying degrees of damage and loss, affecting homes, properties and the livelihoods of some residents. I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to all individuals and families who have suffered losses as a result of the recent floods,” he said.
In a Facebook post, Mr Tsekpo acknowledged the disruption caused by the flooding and urged residents to remain composed while response efforts continue.
“I fully appreciate the difficulties and distress this situation has caused, and I encourage affected residents to remain calm as efforts are being intensified to address the situation,” he wrote.
Damage assessment under way
The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Physical Planning Officer, engineers from the Assembly and officers from NADMO are visiting the affected communities.
Their work includes assessing the flooded areas and documenting the scale of damage to homes, property and livelihoods.
The findings will be used to guide further interventions and help authorities develop measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding and preventing a recurrence.
“Our thoughts are with all affected families during this difficult period,” the MP said.
