Hoglikope gets potable water after 60yrs

After 60 years of scavenging for water, the residents of Logba-Hoglikope, in the Afadjato-South District of the Volta Region now have potable water from a borehole.

‘Reach 4 Ghana’, a US-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), funded the water system, working through Life for the Living Medical and Humanitarian Centre (LILIMED), an NGO based in Ho.

The total cost is GH¢ 18,188.00 – the first water project of ‘Reach-4 Ghana’.

Yesuvi Bright Gadri, the Chairman of the Management Committee of the Community, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the first families to settle in the area used to walk about eight kilometers along the mountain ranges to obtain water from the Vui River.

However, he said, rice farming around that water source contaminated it leaving residents with no choice than to use the Bunya stream, which was nearer but unwholesome.

Mr Gadri said the well dug on the bed of the Bunya stream was supplemented with rain water.

“It was either water from that well, or that from a dam at Logba Alakpeti, quite a distance away,” he stated.

Mr Gadri put number of people in the settler community, made up of people from across the country, and Togo at 1,500.

Bengeo Hydro Ventures, an Accra-based engineering firm, drilled the borehole.

Mr Divine Amlado, a hydrologist, said the potable water would flow from the reservoir through the lines by gravity and that the system would last for up to 25 years when maintained properly.

According to the Reverend Benjamin Bankas, the Chief Executive of LILIMED, ‘Reach 4 Ghana’ had expressed interest in working to improve living standards of residents there in all areas, and also supporting faith-based programmes at the their request.
