Ho could face water crisis

Mr. Anthony Gagblezu-Alomatu, Acting Volta Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) gave the hint on Monday.

He said water in the Volta Lake has receded at the intake points of the pumping station at Kpeve head-works due to drought.

Mr. Gagbleza-Alomatu was briefing Mr. Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Volta Regional Minister and a team of pressmen on tour of the pumping station following irregular flow of water in Ho since November 2013.

He said the Kpeve Water Station was producing 2.5 million gallons of water daily instead of the estimated 4.5 gallons.

Mr. Gagbleza-Alomatu explained that only one pump at the base of the river was working due to the low level of the water.

He said the pontoon at the floating intake emergency site was rusty and unsafe for use and called for total rehabilitation of the equipment of the station to match the increasing demand for water.

Mr. Afotey-Agbo commended the staff for their commitment to work.

The Kpeve Water Station was commissioned in 1993 and provides pipe-borne water to Ho and Peki with most of its equipment looking rusty; having being in service for 20 out of the 25 years lifespan.

Mr Afotey-Agbo also visited the Kpeve Agricultural Research Station. He expressed worry about its dormancy and promised to explore ways to revive it.
