A total of 209 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases, were recorded at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) last year, an increase of 48 cases, as compared with the previous year’s figures.
Mr. Eric Koranteng, Head of the CCTH Records Department, who disclosed this at the hospital’s 2014 Annual Performance Review Conference, indicated that the figure was made up of 189 adults and 20 children.
He further disclosed that seven HIV patients, including a child, died, as against 12 cases recorded in the previous year.
The three-day review was on the theme: “Accelerating Process Towards Achieving Millenium Developmemt Goals Four, Five and Six, Focusing on Pragmatic Steps That Can Be Taken in 2015″
It was attended by the hospital’s board, management, heads of departments, medical and non-medical staff, and representatives from the University of Cape Coast Medical School, the Ghana Health Service, and other teaching hospitals, including Korke Bu and Tamale.
Mr. Koranteng said a total of 5,112 HIV patients visited the hospital for clinical follow-ups, and out of 1,102 patients screened for Tuberculosis, 11 were diagnosed and placed on treatment.
A total of 774 HIV patients, including 49 children, were receiving Anti-Retroviral Vaccines (ARV), he disclosed.
Mr. Koranteng further disclosed that 9,135 diabetic patients, made up of 70 percent females and 30 percent males, visited the facility, while 362 asthmatic patients, made up of 65 percent females and 35 percent males, also attended the hospital for treatment.
