Highway robbers attack commuters on Jasikan-Kadjebi highway

A gang of highway robbers in the early hours of Sunday struck on the Jasikan-Kadjebi stretch of the Accra-Kpassa road subjecting about 28 passengers on a bus to torture, search and other dehumanising treatment.

Two passengers, who were ordered to lie flat on a portion of the highway, were accidentally killed by the bus, one on the spot and the other later at the Saint Mary’s Catholic hospital at Papase, when one of the robbers went into the driver’s seat to search for some booty.

Narrating the incident to the Ghana News Agency, Annor Danso, driver in-charge of the bus said five highway robbers, three of whom were wielding guns, emerged from the bush at a bad segment of the road, which forced the driver to slowdown, and attacked them amidst firing at about 0100-0130 hours of Sunday.

He said when the bus came to a halt, the robbers pulled the driver off his seat and ordered passengers to alight, where they were thoroughly searched and their monies and mobile phones taken.

Mr Danso said some of the robbers then jumped onto the bus to further search the luggage of passengers, adding that, it was during their search, that a robber took over the driver’s seat and moved the bus injuring two passengers, who were among those asked to lie on the highway.

He said the robbers fled into the bush and it took them several hours to get to Jasikan to make a formal report.

Mr Kartey Otumi, Hohoe Divisional Crime Officer corroborated the incident and said the Police have activated investigations into the matter especially the deaths of the two passengers.
