High cost of sheep damps Eid Adha celebration in Northern region

Most Muslim families are unhappy about rising costs of sheep within the Tamale metropolis, which has been the common animal used in the celebration of the Eid Adha festival.

The cheapest price of a skinny goat goes for GHC90, in a region where goats and sheep have always been cheapest.

Our regional correspondent, Prince Kwame Tamakloe visited some markets and reported that, traders are complaining of the high cost of doing business, hence their decision to increase the prices.

Muslims today are marking the Eid Adha celebration globally. Eid al-Adha is considered a solemn holiday and translates to Festival of Sacrifice.

The event falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah on the Muslim lunar calendar and lasts four days. Affluent Muslims are expected to sacrifice their best halal animals to symbolize Ibrahim’s sacrifice.

A third of the animal’s meat is then distributed to the poor with the rest distributed to family and friends.
