Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe, has leapt to the defence of goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, questioning why the player is facing criticism despite performing his role effectively.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Pappoe expressed surprise at the public scrutiny directed at Asare, insisting the goalkeeper has fulfilled his responsibilities on the pitch.
“I don’t know why people are making an issue of it. The man has been given a job to do, and he (Benjamin Asare) is doing the job, so what is our point?” he said.
Pappoe stressed that Asare’s primary duty is to prevent goals, and so far, he believes the goalkeeper has done exactly that.
“We put him into the goalpost to make sure we don’t have balls entering our net… and he is doing just that. It’s not a call we should be making now,” he added.
Asare, who has delivered a series of solid performances for club and country, has still faced doubts from some fans and pundits, particularly regarding his consistency at the highest level.
However, Pappoe urged supporters to focus on results rather than unnecessary debates.
His comments highlight ongoing discussions within Ghanaian football about player selection and public pressure, especially for goalkeepers, a position often under intense scrutiny.
For now, the message from the former GFA chief is clear: Asare deserves support, not criticism.
