HelpAge organises free screening for the aged

Accra, Sept. 26, GNA – To mark the United Nations Day for the aged, which falls on Monday October 1, HelpAge Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation, on Wednesday organised a free screening exercise for the aged in Accra.

The screening exercise, which offered diagnosis for ear, nose and throat, attracted about 120 elderly people from 18 communities in Accra. Dr Emmanuel Kitcher, Head of the Ear, Nose Throat (ENT) Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, told the GNA that those who needed special attention had been asked to report at the ENT Unit with their National Health Insurance cards for further diagnosis and treatment.

Mr Ebenezer Adjetey-Sorsey, Executive Director of Help Age Ghana, said the number of elderly people who visited the Centre for the aged had doubled and this had brought additional financial burden on the organization.

He appealed to government to come out with a national policy on the aged to address issues affecting them.
