Help stop spread of cholera, Director

Accra (Greater Accra), 22 Jan. ’99 – Dr Sam Bugri, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, yesterday called on the public to maintain proper sanitary conditions to help stop the spread of cholera in the region and other parts of the country. He said about 132 suspected cases have been reported throughout the country since January three, of which eight deaths were reported.

Dr Bugri who was speaking to newsmen in Accra could however, not give an update on the number of reported cases and deaths that have occurred in the recent outbreak in some parts of Accra. Dr Bugri said the Information Services Department is currently going round educating the public on the proper disposal of both liquid and solid waste.

He said AMA is trying its best to enhance sanitation in the city ”but it will need the assistance from all of us”. He said cholera is mainly caused by a bacteria known as Vibro Cholera, which multiplies in filthy areas adding that people should learn to stop defecating indiscriminately, especially, around the beaches.
