Heightened Security at Elubo Border as Ivorians Seek Refuge in Ghana

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has called on security officers at the Elubo border to maintain heightened vigilance as more Ivorians cross into Ghana to escape election-related tensions ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s general elections on October 25, 2025.

So far, over 1,500 Ivorians have entered Ghana seeking safety from the unrest, prompting tighter security and monitoring at the border.

During an official visit to the Ghana–Ivory Coast border post, Mr. Nelson advised officers to carefully screen all entrants to prevent potential criminals from taking advantage of the situation.

“The situation remains unpredictable. Let’s keep a close watch on those coming in so we can address any emerging security threats before they surprise us,” he cautioned.

“With the elections drawing closer, it’s likely that more people will arrive. Be ready to receive them, but stay alert so that no criminal elements slip through to disturb our peace,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner of Immigration at the Elubo Command, DCI Joshua Krakue, noted the challenge of distinguishing between ordinary travellers and asylum seekers.

“Many Ivorians are leaving temporarily as a precaution and may return home after the elections. However, they don’t initially declare themselves as asylum seekers at the border,” he explained.

“They come as regular travellers but later proceed to the refugee camps. We’ve observed that their numbers are steadily rising, even though it’s not a case of large groups crossing with their belongings,” DCI Krakue added.
