Health officials on importance of birth certificates

Techiman (B/A) Nov. 22, GNA – The Techiman Municipal Office of the Births and Deaths Registry recorded a total of 1,810 births between January and June this year. Mr. Chaudry Daudu Imoro, Municipal Director, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Techiman on Wednesday, said 155 deaths were recorded during the period, out of which 96 were males and 59 females.
Mr. Imoro said 918 males and 892 females were born within the period, adding, through the efforts of the environmental health workers, the people had become more aware about the acquisition of birth certificates for their newly born babies.
He suggested to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to make the provision of birth certificates of children as a pre-requisite for their admission into nursery schools to encourage parents to obtain proper birth certificates.
Mr. David Sham-Uuna Sidabu, Deputy Municipal Officer of the Registry noted that lack of office accommodation and computers to store data was a major problem in the smooth running of the office in the municipality.
He complained about parents’ ignorance about providing their house numbers as well as the ages of family members, which made the work of the Registry difficult and appealed to traditional authorities and unit committees to educate the people on the importance of registering births and deaths.
