Health of Dawhenya residents in danger

Dawhenya (GAR), Nov. 12, GNA – Residents of Dawhenya in Dangme East District of Greater Region, have registered their protests against the activities of food canning companies, which transport life threatening decomposed fish waste through the town.

They are therefore calling on Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the health and security authorities to investigate the activities of the corporate entities responsible and apply the necessary sanctions before the bad smell they are exposed to, choke them to death.

Some of the residents blamed the recent cases of cholera and other epidemic diseases in the community to the action of the companies.

They have vowed to block the major road used by the haulage trucks to transport the fish and stage a street protest to draw the attention of the authorities to their predicament.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Madam Elizabeth Martey a food vendor said the nauseating stench from the rotten fish is killing the appetite of her customers and deny her, her expected sales for the day.

“It is unfair and insensitive for the food companies to handle their waste in such an unhygienic manner to the discomfort of residents,” she added.

Madam Martey said safeguarding public health is crucial for the survival of mankind.
