Health: Normal to be slightly overweight- nutritionist

According to nutritionist David Nii Amankwah Addo, being slightly overweight is nothing one should worry over.

In an interview with Beatrice Baiden concerning research findings about obese individuals on etv Ghana’s flagship programme, Awake, he stated that “being slightly overweight is not a problem because there are people who may likely store more water than others.”

He added that, “It is also good to be slightly overweight than be obese simply because it makes you look better. You look nicer and being slightly overweight makes you look good because it adds certain curves to certain parts of the body.”

Though he spoke in defence of being slightly overweight, he cautioned against the phenomenon because where the excess weight is stored is not always known and that could be traumatic.

“The research cautions that one should be very careful. You do not know especially where you store the excess weight which is fat.”

According to Mr. Amankwah Addo, if one is above what is considered to be the normal, “I don’t think that is a problem as long as you know your health status.”

Dr, Addo said one could equally be slim or within the normal range and still have health issues because “they could be eating all the wrong food and may even have problems with their heart. They may have high blood pressure, diabetes and may have high cholesterol.”
