The government has taken steps to resolve the issue of unpaid nurses and midwives, announcing that they will be migrated onto the payroll.

This move comes after the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) threatened to strike over salary arrears spanning 10-14 months.

However, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stated that the government collaborated with the Ministry of Finance to secure clearance and process the payments.

Speaking to the media in Accra, Minister Akandoh disclosed that 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns will receive payment, following the Ministry of Health’s successful financial clearance.

The resolution aims to prevent disruptions in healthcare services, particularly in major hospitals where junior doctors play a crucial role.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the service conditions of healthcare workers and maintaining stability in the health sector.

“Financial clearance secured for payment of the 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who started their national service in early 2024. Financial clearance secured for 13,500 recruited and posted late last year [2024], with their financial clearance expiring by 31st December 2024,” he stated.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh emphasized that “by resolving the salary issue, the we hope to boost morale and retain talented healthcare workers”

This comes after the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives staged a protest on Thursday, October 2, 2025, to demand the payment of salary arrears owed by the government.

According to the group, over 7,000 nurses and midwives have been working without salaries for the past nine to 10 months, despite being formally recruited through official government processes.
