Health Minister Calls for Empathy and Accountability in Ghana’s Healthcare System

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has called for a revolution in patient care, urging healthcare professionals to prioritize empathy, dignity, and professionalism when treating patients. Speaking at the inauguration of the Ghana Health Service and Ho Teaching Hospital Governing Boards on Monday, June 16, the Minister highlighted the pressing need for improved standards in the country’s healthcare facilities.

During his address, Akandoh cited concerning reports and observations of inadequate treatment of patients, which he said deter many from seeking medical attention despite the availability of equipment and services.

“Patients deserve to be treated with empathy and respect. It’s disheartening that some avoid hospitals not because of a lack of facilities but due to poor attitudes from professionals. This must change,” the Minister asserted.

He also challenged health institutions to take greater financial responsibility by utilizing internally generated funds to repair and replace faulty equipment rather than relying on government intervention.

“Equipment failures should not always require government funds for repairs. Open accounts, save for maintenance, and ensure healthcare delivery remains uninterrupted,” he said.
