Accra, Nov. 19, GNA- Out of 55 Khebab sellers identified in the Accra Metropolis who underwent medical screening to enable them to provide quality and hygienic meat as part of preparations towards CAN 2008 tournament, 22 had Typhoid in their blood samples. Mr. William Lomo Tettey, Assistance Chief Environmental Health Officer in-charge of Food and Hygiene of the Accra Metropolitan assembly (AMA) made this known as a follow-up on Monday in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
He said those declared unfit to handle meat had been referred to the hospitals for treatment before the issuance of the Medical Certificates to them.
Mr Tettey said studies had revealed that diseases like tuberculosis, cholera and typhoid had become frequent due to lack of proper food or meat preservation, hence the exercise to sensitise the Khebab sellers to obey basic hygienic practices. He warned of the dangers of selling unwholesome meat and advised the Khebab sellers to protect their meat against contamination from flies and dust.
Mr Tettey said his outfit has drawn up a programme to sensitise the public as well as food handlers to adopt positive changes in food preservation. 19 Nov. 07
