Health alert! Dompoase landfill site overflows with waste

Residents at Dompoase, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region say they can no longer bear the stench and unhygienic situation of the City’s biggest landfill site.

The enclave plays host to the 1,000-tonnes of refuse generated daily in the Metropolis and its environs.

Ultimate FM’s P.K. Dickson, who visited the site Tuesday reported that the situation was unbearable for residents who fear there could be an outbreak of disease soon if the situation is not handled well.

The $4-million modern waste management facility at Dompoase was completed in 2004.

Chinese construction firm China Water and Electric Company used two years to complete the project, which was jointly financed by the World Bank, Government of Ghana and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

The 100-acre landfill project which is equipped with modern waste management facilities was designed to contain all the solid and liquid waste generated in the Metropolis for 15 years, but the site now overflows with solid and liquid waste, making conditions there very unpleasant, Dickson observed.
