Hawkers Union petitions Fanteakwa District Assembly

Akim Osino (E/R), Feb. 18, GNA – The Zonal Hawkers’ Union at Akim-Osino has petitioned the Fanteakwa District Assembly to resolve an impasse between the Union and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over the collection of “unauthorised levies” from the members.

According to a spokesperson of the Union, Madam Adjoa Kyeraa, officials of the IRS at Koforidua usually came to collect a levy of 4,000 cedis each from union members but issued them with a receipt belonging to the Ghana Hotels Association instead of the IRS. Speaking to the GNA on Tuesday, she explained that each union member already paid a monthly levy of 10,000 cedis to the Fanteakwa District Assembly in addition to 500 cedis daily toll for their commercial activities.

Mad. Kyeraa said based on their suspicion that the receipts were illegal, the Union had resolved “to resist the collection of such unauthorized levy as it affects our scanty daily income,” adding that the Union had notified the Assembly members in the town of their decision.

When contacted, two Assembly members, Mr Rexford Doku-Akonpe and Mrs Doku-Amponsa, confirmed the story and said they had taken up the matter with the Assembly in a bid to resolve the impasse amicably.
