Hasten implementation of NHIS in Talensi Nabdam District

Tongo (UE), June 2, GNA – The Chiefs and people of Talensi Nabdam District in the Upper East Region have appealed to Government to fast-track the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the area.

They made the appeal at the People’s Assembly held by the District Assembly in Tongo at the weekend. The people said, the absence of the Scheme in the District, was seriously affecting the health needs of the people, especially women and children.

Reacting to their concerns, the District Chief Executive, Mr Anaba Nabila assured them that, the a lot has been done to begin implementation of the Scheme adding, staffs have already been recruited and the only thing left was the license to start. He explained that, the District though established only four years ago, had benefited from a lot of development projects and said for the 2007 year alone, thirty-three development projects were executed including classroom blocks, clinics, nurses’ quarters, and a community information centre.

Mr Nabila said in a bid to develop the human resource base of the country, the Assembly last year spent GH¢55,731 to sponsor teachers and nurses’ trainees and students from both tertiary and senior high school.

He said a total of 262.2 kilometres of road had been re-gravelled, graded and upgraded in the district.

Mr Nabila indicted that, with the Capitation Grant, school enrolment increased and as a result, the district had decided to build more classroom blocks to contain school children. He appealed to the Lands Commission, the Town and Country Planning Department and the Survey Department to support and assist the assembly to properly demarcate the boundaries of the District to forestall future conflicts.
