Hairdressers urged to take advantage of adult education classes

Ms Bernice Nkansah, a tutor at Oyska Training Institute of Cosmetology, on Wednesday advised hairdressers unable to read and write to take advantage of adult education classes in their communities.

She said that was the only way they could cope with the competition in the “ever changing world of technology” associated with Cosmetology.

Ms Nkansah said practical knowledge alone was not enough and that the practitioners needed theoretical lessons to be conversant with chemical combinations and applications.

She described hairdressing as a trendy profession and urged the participants to endeavour to learn new skills and innovations everyday to stay on top.

Ms Nkansah gave the advice at a two-week training session for 30 members of Ghana Progressive Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GPHBA) in the Volta Region at Mafi-Kumasi.

The training, under the auspices of GPHBA, had sponsorship from the Skills Development Fund (SDF) and the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET).

It was to help the participants to be abreast with modern technologies and meet international standards required of practitioners.

Ms Alexandra Sarpong, the Volta Regional President of the GPHBA, said hairdressing played an important role in the local economy and described the training as timely.

The participants were taken through entrepreneurship, saloon management, financial management, professional image, critical presentation, physical presentation, practical work and personal hygiene.
