Hairdresser dies through criminal abortion

Asamankese, Jan. 18, GNA – Two persons were on Tuesday arraigned before the Asamankese Circuit Court, on a charge of intentionally and unlawfully causing the death of a 17-year-old hairdresser, through illegal abortion. The plea of Kwasi Isaac Aggrey, an auto-electrician and Vida Ntifu, a trader, was not taken and are on GH¢5,000 bail with a surety each to re-appear on March 14.

Police Inspector Kate Ogyiri, prosecuting, told the court that the deceased, Sarah Tetteh, was a girl-friend of Aggrey and also a friend of Vida.

She said Sarah was five months pregnant when the two accused persons allegedly gave her a poisonous substance at Tarkwa, on June 3, 2009. She, however, travelled to Asamankese and fell critically ill and was rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital on June 04, but died on admission.

The two accused persons were later arrested.

The prosecutor said a duplicate docket had been prepared to the Attorney General’s Department for advice. A Post-mortem report on the deceased said, before her death, she had difficulty in breathing, painful throat and pain in the chest and ribs. 18 Jan. 11
