The Gwollu Health Centre in the Sissala West District has been upgraded to a District Hospital with two residential medical doctors.
Dr. Zakari Bukari, the Sissala East District Director of Health Services who announced this, said the facility also has five midwives.
Dr. Bukari was giving an account of the health situation in the District at a meeting with the Gwollu Traditional Council in Gwollu on Thursday.
He appealed to the people to cooperate with the health workers to render quality healthcare services to them.
The District Director announced that equipment and machines brought to the Hospital had not been installed because of lack of space, and therefore urged authorities to provide the necessary infrastructural needs that would facilitate the installation of the equipment to benefit the people.
He said the Hospital has no x-ray, anesthesia machines and Blood Bank facilities. Accommodation for doctors was also a constraint.
Dr. Bukari noted that the District has attained the Millennial Development Goal target on maternal health as it recorded one maternal death for the past three years as against five in the past.
He said antenatal service for pregnant women had been raised from 60 per cent to 80 per cent, and that had contributed immensely to the reduction in maternal and child deaths in the District.
He said ten Community Based Health and Planning Service (CHPS) Compounds had been constructed at deprived communities with the support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to augment the existing facilities to help promote healthcare delivery in the area.
Dr. Bukari commended the people for establishing emergency transport system and the provision of tricycles by the District Assembly to convey the sick from the hinterland to health facilities on time.
