GWCL to improve water supply to Accra East

Accra, July 14, GNA – Ms Cecilia Dapaah, the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, on Thursday said there were plans to transfer some amount of water produced at the Weija head works to the eastern parts of the metropolis as a medium-term solution to water supplies in eastern Accra.

“This proposed project, termed the Ghana Water Company Limited West-East (GWCL) Transfer, is scheduled to commence soon…”

” This project, when completed, will lead to some improvement in the supply situation in eastern Accra area. The people of La Koo and Adobeto should benefit from this when completed,” the Deputy Minister said in Parliament in response to a question.

Nii Amasah Namoale, NDC-La Dade Kotopon, had asked when the people of La Koo and Adobeto electoral areas of the La Dade Kotopon constituency would enjoy uninterrupted supply of pipe-borne water. The Deputy Minister said generally, in eastern Accra, water supply was inadequate because of insufficient supplies.

She said it was important to emphasize that, uninterrupted supply of pipe borne water to most areas in the east of Accra, including the La Koo and Adobeto areas could only be obtained after the Kpong Expansion Works.

She said all necessary steps would be taken for this programme to be implemented according to schedule.

Responding to another question on steps being taken to ensure safe drinking water for the people of Tamale, Ms Dapaah, said as a short-term measure, engineering expertise was being sought to rehabilitate and refurbish all existing pumping equipment in the area. “The medium to long-term solution to the water supply problems of Tamale is the implementation of the Tamale Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion project in the metropolis.”
