GWCL metering is theft of the highest order – Policy analyst

A staunch member of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed, has described the water metering pilot project yet-to-be undertaken by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) as “fraud”, claiming that the government has colluded with the company authorities to short-change Ghanaians.

According to him, the pilot project is a ploy to cheat water consumers in the country.

Speaking on Oman FM, Atik Mohammed expressed disappointment in the authorities for adopting a plan to pilot a prepaid metering system for the supply of water to consumers.

He indicated that the authorities are opting for an alternative which does not reflect their service delivery.

To him, they cannot attach prepaid meters to the water system when they are unable to make water accessible to all consumers in the nation.

In his earnest view, the GWCL should first tackle the issue of water shortage that has since become a huge problem to Ghanaians before their use of Direct Debit payment system to reduce ‘revenue.’

They should “plan how to give us the water first,” he stated.

But under the circumstances where a number of consumers cannot easily access water in the country, he emphasized that the Ghana Water Company will only be engaging in a “grand theft”.

“This is fraud that they want to perpetuate on the good people of this country…You can’t give what you don’t have. So, you can’t sell what is non-existent…So, this is a grand fraud that has been thought through very well.”
