GWCL is a very confused entity – Lloyd Amoah

Dr Lloyd Amoah of Ashesi University says the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is a “very confused” entity.

He said beside the company using very obsolete equipment in producing water, it is in a haze about how to tackle the numerous problems confronting water production in Ghana.

Dr Amoah’s observations follow a recent acute water shortage that hit the capital.

The GWCL put the disruption in supply down to a burst pipeline at its Weija plant.

It also intended shutting down the Kpong water treatment plant temporarily for some technical upgrade work, but fears that the shut down could worsen the water crisis compelled Sector Minister Collins Dauda and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to stop the exercise.

Dr Amoah said the Water Company is so confused to the extent that its management doesn’t even know whether the Company’s inefficiencies are due to leakages in production or a tariff problem.

He told Citi FM on Saturday that the GWCL must always have contingency plans for water supply during crises.
