GTEC Expresses Disappointment as University of Ghana Senior Staff Declare Strike

In a tense turn of events, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has voiced strong disappointment following the decision by the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana to initiate an industrial strike, just as key discussions with state agencies were underway.

The strike, declared on Wednesday, May 21, stems from what the Association describes as “unacceptable delays” in implementing a negotiated agreement signed with the government on November 12, 2024. However, GTEC is pushing back, calling the move a “demonstration of bad faith.”

In a statement released Thursday and signed by Director-General Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, GTEC expressed frustration that the union failed to show up at a scheduled National Labour Commission (NLC) meeting, the very day they announced the strike.

“The timing of this action is unfortunate,” the statement read. “We were actively engaging the union and expected continued cooperation, especially given our shared goal of protecting academic stability.”

GTEC acknowledged the agreement in question but pointed to post-election transitional delays as the root of the hold-up. With ministers appointed only in February 2025 and the national budget read in March, the Commission insists the new administration needs more time to act on prior commitments.

“You are also aware that the Hon. Minister of Education assured you in April of his commitment to resolving the issue,” GTEC reminded the union in its release.

While the union’s concerns resonate with many within the university system, GTEC emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue over disruptive action, especially as academic activities are at stake.

The standoff raises broader questions about labor relations in Ghana’s tertiary sector and how government transitions affect long-standing commitments. For now, students and faculty across the country will be watching closely as both sides return, hopefully to the negotiating table.
